What is semaglutide, and how does it help you lose weight?

Semaglutide is a once-weekly injectable medication that mimics GLP-1, a gut hormone that tells your brain you are full, slows stomach emptying and steadies blood sugar. The result is a quieter appetite: you feel satisfied with less food, and cutting calories stops feeling like a fight.

Semaglutide (Wegovy®) has been FDA-approved for chronic weight management since 2021. In the 68-week STEP 1 trial, adults taking 2.4 mg once weekly lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight, compared with 2.4% on placebo (Wilding et al., NEJM, 2021).

Tirzepatide (Zepbound®), approved for weight management in 2023, activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. In the 72-week SURMOUNT-1 trial, adults on the 15 mg dose lost an average of 20.9% of their body weight (Jastreboff et al., NEJM, 2022).

Both medications work best alongside better eating habits and regular movement, which is why our program includes coaching and weekly check-ins, not just a prescription. Individual results vary, and both are prescribed at Beautiful Body and Beyond only after a provider evaluation.

Which medication is right for you?

Both are once-weekly injections that curb appetite, and both are offered in the BBB Weight Loss Program. Semaglutide activates one receptor (GLP-1); tirzepatide activates two (GIP and GLP-1), which is the main reason trial participants lost more weight on it on average. Your provider recommends one based on your health history, your goals and how you tolerate each medication.

Am I a candidate?

GLP-1 medications are generally considered for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnea.

They are prescription medicines, and they are not right for everyone:

  • They are not used during pregnancy, while breastfeeding or while trying to conceive.
  • A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 rules them out.
  • A history of pancreatitis, certain gastrointestinal conditions and some other medications need review first.

How is the medication administered?
Both semaglutide and tirzepatide are given as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection with a very small needle, usually in the abdomen or thigh. We show you how to self-administer at home, or you can come to the office for your weekly dose. The dose starts low and increases gradually to limit side effects.
How soon will I see results?
Many clients notice a quieter appetite within the first two weeks. Meaningful weight loss builds over months as the dose increases: the pivotal trials ran 68 weeks (semaglutide) and 72 weeks (tirzepatide). Results vary from person to person, and they depend on the nutrition and activity habits the medication makes easier to keep.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, diarrhea and reduced appetite, which usually ease as your body adjusts to each dose. Less common but serious risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, which is why we screen your history first and check in weekly. Report severe or persistent abdominal pain to your provider right away.
How is tirzepatide different from semaglutide?

Do I have to come into the office every week?
No. Weekly check-ins can be done in person at our Corona office or remotely by phone or video. Your initial consultation and lab work are done in person.
Can I combine the weight-loss program with body contouring?
Yes. Many clients treat stubborn pockets that remain after weight loss with CoolSculpting Elite, or tighten loose skin with Evolve. We usually recommend waiting until your weight has stabilized so the contouring results last.
